A French Touch Salon recently asked us to create an online video showcasing Patricia Kaspian’s day of training in Colorescience’s prestigious annual training program. What this video doesn’t reveal is how well protected I, the camera operator, was from the sun. Like the many beautiful women featured in the piece, I was shielded from harsh UV rays by a thin layer of chemical-free minerals. Although most of the filming was done indoors, had the training taken place in a sun-beaten desert, I would have emerged from it with only a pleasant tan.

Estranged from society in my editing cave a few days later, my curiosity about the effectiveness of the mineral sunscreen and my craving for natural light compelled me to draw a “band” around one of my arms using the SPF 50 Sunforgettable mineral powder and hit the “Editor’s Express.” “Editor’s Express” is the colloquial name for a local jogging route which only video editors use. On any given day, taking a spin around the Editor’s Express will put you face to face with the women and men cutting the best, worst, most exciting and most tedious videos of our age. It’s the great equalizer of cave dwellers, it’s where we turn for inspiration, escape, comradeship, calorie-burning and natural light, and it’s where — as a band of skin on my arm remained untanned — I learned that the spf minerals work.

Here’s to never shooting anything in a sun-beaten desert, and to having Colorescience minerals on hand if I do.

There’s a quote at the Sugar Paper site that we like a lot: “Sugar Paper is more than luxurious stationery. It is a statement about one’s individual style.” Their ability to mix design elements and materials to create thoroughly original, beautiful products is one of the reasons Sugar Paper has become so popular. Hoping to extend that philosophy to the way the commercial was shot, we brought our Super 8 film camera along for the shoot.

As long-time supporters of the theory that there are few things better to film than 100 year old printing presses*, we were thinking Sugar Paper’s internet commercial shoot last week couldn’t really get any better. Then Chelsea and Jamie picked up Americanos from neighboring Clementine’s Restaurant, and it did.

There’s a quote on the Sugar Paper that we like a lot: “Sugar Paper is more than luxurious stationery. It is a statement about one’s individual style.” Their ability to mix design elements and materials to create thoroughly original, beautiful products is one of the reasons Sugar Paper has become so popular. Wanting to extend that philosophy to the way the commercial was shot, we ran a Super 8 film camera alongside our video cameras and Americanos.

The minute we started collaborating with Jamie and Chelsea, it became clear why people love working with them — they’re one of the most inspiring, creative teams we’ve had the opportunity to make a commercial with.

The minute we started working with Adam, it became clear why he’s become so famous for the Michael Jackson dance he can do while running one of the presses.

*This theory was developed by Adam’s arch-rival and fellow printing press operator, Chris (in the photo below), who filmed these same printing presses while making a short about Benjamin Franklin’s ghost, which we watched part of during lunch.

Our friends at Global Fitness have just launched their new site at globalfitness.com. Webmaster Brett Labistour, who was not contacted for comment because translating the javascript that he now speaks fluently would take us longer than the months he dedicated to designing and programming one of the best looking websites we’ve seen in a while.

Global Fitness, based in Los Angeles, hired us for their video production in October 2009. We’ve had the opportunity to work with them on videos that are now embedded throughout the new site.

Less than thrilled with the fact that few accredited high schools in the United States offer more than cursory instruction in the arts of remanufacturing fitness equipment to students interested in the topic, we felt obligated to dedicate several of the videos we made with Global to the process. We got so close to a treadmill being powder-coated that Topher worried about his camera taking on the luster and shine of like-new fitness equipment. I think it would have looked cool, and I think it would have been a great addition to the list of things that differentiate us from other video production companies, but it wasn’t my camera.

They wanted an internet commercial to use on their ArtOfTea.com homepage which would give visitors a “behind the scenes” look at the quality and variety of tea that Art of Tea sells online and in coffee shops, hotels and in national restaurant chains such as Benihana and national retailers like Whole Foods. We worked closely with Steve Schwartz, Founder and President of Art of Tea, to create this profile of the company. If you haven’t tried Art of Tea yet, don’t wait any longer!

The Maple Tree Inn, a 177 room hotel in the heart of Silicon Valley, wanted a Business Showcase Optimized Commercial™ they could place on their homepage to communicate the Maple Tree Inn experience to prospective guests. We worked with the hotel’s management to define the hotel’s unique advantages and outlined a structure focused on the hotel’s well-appointed rooms, prime location, popular buffet and unique green program. We intercut professional voiceover with interviews by three members of the management staff and an enthusiastic guest to capture as much of the hotel’s spirit as possible in this piece. The commercial can now be seen in high definition at MapleTreeInn.com.

“We were excited to work with One Lens Media after seeing their ability to create material in a spectrum of tones and styles. They have a brilliant way of telling the story of complicated products in an immediately engaging way, leaving the viewer hungry for more. Besides being a great communicator, Nick took our idea and brought it to the next level with innovative shooting and editing and by introducing a wonderful tapestry of sound. All in all their work made our product appealing to a larger audience than we expected and gave us the centerpiece to our marketing campaign! Can’t wait to work with One Lens Media again. We highly recommend them.”
